چکیده

We have successfully used phase matching considerations to provide significant discrimination against cascaded lower-order responses and measured the direct fifth-order response from the intermolecular motions in liquid CS2. Here we report the measured polarized and magic angle responses and discuss comparisons

Polarization selectivity in fifth-order electronically nonresonant Raman scattering from CS2

This paper presents several experimentally collected tensor elements of the direct fifth-order Raman signal of room temperature CS2 . All results were collected so as to reduce contamination from third-order cascade signals, and it is shown that while these cascade signals are of varying importance in different tensor elements, phase matching considerations are sufficient to make the direct fif...

Direct fifth-order electronically nonresonant Raman scattering from CS2 at room temperature

In this paper we report the measurement of the direct fifth-order electronically nonresonant intermolecular response from liquid CS2 at room temperature. We recently demonstrated that all previous attempts to measure the direct fifth-order response were dominated by third-order cascaded signals @J. Chem Phys. 111, 3105 ~1999!#. Here we show that phase matching considerations can be used to prov...

Heterodyne-detected fifth-order nonresonant Raman scattering from room temperature CS2.

Actively phase-locked heterodyne-detected fifth-order nonresonant Raman scattering from room temperature CS2 has been measured. The experimental signals have similar magnitudes, shapes, and sign changes as calculated responses obtained via molecular dynamics simulations [S. Saito and I. Ohmine, Phys. Rev. Lett. 88, 207401 (2002)]. The measured signals contain sign changes that appear to be asso...

Intrinsic cascading contributions to the fifth- and seventh-order electronically off- resonant Raman spectroscopies

The cascading polarization contributing to the femtosecond fifth-and seventh-order coherent Raman scattering processes is obtained in terms of the third-and fifth-order Raman response functions. It is found that four cascading processes contribute to the fifth-order Raman scattering signal. In the case of the seventh-order Raman scattering, there are 34 possible cascading processes contributing...

Diffraction fromOrdered States of HigherMultipoles

Possible ways of identification are discussed of an electronic order of higher multipoles such as octupoles and hexadecapoles. A particularly powerful method is resonant X-ray scattering (RXS) using quadrupolar resonance processes called E2. The characteristic azimuthal angle dependence of Ce0.7La0.3B6 is interpreted as evidence of antiferro-octupole order. For PrRu4P12, eightfold pattern again...
